Renting a car before you set off on a business trip or a family vacation can reduce general wear and tear on your own car. You may want to rent a convertible that lets you feel the wind in your hair as you fly down the highway, or you may prefer a luxury sedan that lets you and your family travel in style. Regardless of which type of car you rent, there are some things you should keep in mind before selecting a size and putting down your deposit.
Additional Drivers Cost Extra
When you agree to rent a car, you sign a contract that states you are the sole or primary driver on that vehicle. If you want anyone else to drive, including your spouse, you must put that individual’s name on the contract and pay an additional fee each day that you keep the car. All additional drivers must meet any requirements the company has in place too. Most companies will not rent to those under the age of 21 or 25, which means that your teen cannot operate that vehicle even with your permission.
You Can Waive Insurance
Rental car companies let renters purchase insurance policies through the company or sign a waiver. This waiver states that you are responsible for any damage done to the car. If your current insurance policy covers rental vehicles, feel free to sign that waiver. Some companies now use a damage assessment app that allows a rental agent to take pictures of the car before you leave. The agent will take additional photos when you return that shows the condition of the vehicle. Any changes to the way the car looks when you drop it off is your responsibility.
Most Companies Offer More Options
Before you rent a car, check with the company about any options you can add. Many rental agencies now offer GPS units that you can rent by the day. Those units let you plug in an address and get directions quickly, which is helpful when visiting a new city. Others offer car seats that are perfect for babies and booster seats that work well to keep your older children safe. You may even have the option of renting a roof rack for your vehicle. Choose any of this options, decide whether you need insurance and keep in mind the number of drivers you want covered when renting a car.
